To mark Penthouse Records' 25th anniversary, Donovan Germain's label is releasing a compilation that retraces its great moments.
Penthouse is first of all a name, given to the studio, which was then located on the top floor of a building on Slipe Pen Road. It is also a sound, which made Donovan Germain one of Jamaica's top producers in the late 80s and early 90s.
Back in 1987 from the United States, where he had run a record shop and several labels, Donovan Germain quickly became unavoidable, notably with Buju Banton, but also Sanchez, Marcia Griffiths, Beres Hammond, Morgan Heritage, Tony Rebel, Wayne Wonder and Tenor Saw. Penthouse remains a stronghold today, with artists such as Busy Signal, Romain Virgo, Richie Spice, Queen Ifrica, Etana and Exco Levi...
Titled "Penthouse 25 Years - The Journey Continues", the compilation comprises two CDs and a DVD of nearly two hours, with interviews with Donovan Germain, Beres Hammond and Marcia Griffiths. It takes all that to retell the label's history.
