New reissue from the Jamwax label: Donnette, by Hopeton Crawford
on Monday, May 18th 2015 - 20 151 views
Specialising in repressing rare tracks, the Jamwax label adds a new reissue to its catalogue: after Delroy Melody and Owen Knibbs, it is the singer Hopeton Crawford’s turn to get fresh exposure, for his track Donnette.
Born on 12 August 1961 in Kingston, Hopeton grew up in Trenchtown. In 1979 he recorded his first two tracks, Life’s Experience at King Tubby’s studio, and Brand New Love for the guitarist Earl Chinna Smith. He also remembers recording seven tracks at Harry J studio, but none of them ever saw the light of day. After moving to Montego Bay, he returned to Kingston in the early 90s, with the digital dancehall riddim of the Flowers Crew and the lyrics of his song Donnette, a tribute to his new wife, whose qualities he praises.
According to Hopeton, fewer than 50 copies were pressed, which he distributed himself. As the years went by, only a handful of original copies remained, sold at a high price and most often in poor condition. In the same session, he recorded three other tracks, Tiki Raggamuffin, Apix Of Your Love and Poor Man, which were never pressed.
20 years later, Jamwax tracked down Hopeton Crawford, who has given up music but kept the original tape in good condition. This allows Jamwax to reissue Donnette in a limited edition of 500 hand-numbered copies.
The 7” (JAMWAX03) is available on www.jamwax.com.
