First series of the year for Marseille's Dub Akom: the Heartwarming riddim. Produced by them on their label Akom Records, it could be discovered at the end of last year with the single My Love by Jahnett Tafari, a young South African artist.

As its name suggests, the Heartwarming riddim is a gentle one drop rhythm. No surprise that most of the tracks are about love: Chezidek begging his beloved to come back (New Love), Jah Marnyah (Krazie in Love), Suga Roy & Conrad Crystal (Soulseeker), and Natural Black (Special Girl).

But there are other themes too, such as Turbulence mourning the bloodbaths of blind violence (See the mothers cry), Pressure who "will not bow before inequality and injustice" (Nah Bow Out), and Million Stylez, for whom life is a spiritual journey that everyone travels alone (Spiritual Journey).

The Heartwarming riddim will be available in digital only on 14 February 2013.

Tracklist:
01. Turbulence - See the mothers Cry
02. Ricardo Clarke - Snake in Paradise

In Jamaica, the lifeblood of the record industry is the riddim (from "rhythm"), an instrumental produced by a label. A label that does not settle for recording a single artist on that riddim, but as many as it can: this is what is called a "series". To make a name for itself, a label will try to get big names on its riddim. Amid the endless flow of releases, artists have every interest in voicing the most popular riddim of the moment. Every week in Jamaica, more than a hundred 7" singles are produced this way. Only later, if an artist manages to find a distributor and a record company, can they make an album, which usually gathers some of those singles.
