Perfect

Perfect opened the doors to the general public with his hit Handcart Bwoy in 2004. The quality of the singles that followed (Talk Black Marcus on the Maroon riddim, Rainbow on the Lava ground and Johnny on the Chapter a day) makes him one of the most promising artists of his generation.

Born in the hills of Bamboo, in the south of St Ann (the parish famous for having been home to Burning Spear and Bob Marley), Perfect, whose real name is Greg Rose, is a committed rasta with conscious lyrics. After wearing out the stages of school and local parties, he hung around President Brown's Studio in Ocho Rios. It was there that he recorded his first dubplates, for local sound systems. He also learned the basics of mixing and production there. After a spell in Kingston, where he went from studio to studio and recorded notably for Penthouse and King Jammy's, he signed a contract with AXX Music in 1999. Together they released his first album, "Sweet and Black", in 2001. But it was in 2004 that he truly established himself on the Jamaican music scene, with a lightning hit, Handcart Bwoy, for the producer Glenice Gooden of the label Rebel Music. He had waited four years to find the right riddim to record this song.

The Handcart Bwoy is a vendor whose stall is a wheelbarrow that he pushes in front of him, attracting customers along his way. It is a trade Perfect practised before taking up singing. The song tells the story of this vendor, who leads a simple life and is most often looked down on, and with whom a girl falls in love. Handcart Bwoy left a particularly strong impression. Mutabaruka himself is full of praise for the young singer.
It was followed by Talk Black Marcus on the Maroon Riddim from the label Downsound Record, dedicated to Marcus Garvey; Rainbow, on the Lava Ground from Loyal Soldiers; Johnny on the Chapter a day, and also All i've got, on the Real Life... all exemplary. More recently, his songs Bobo Nuh Shave and Lock Mi Up have once again hit the charts, fixing his name a little more firmly in the public's mind. In less than a year, Perfect already has enough material to fill a fine album.
