REVIEW
Review written by Alexandre Tonus on Tuesday, September 12th 2006 - 17 544 views
Although eagerly awaited, Perfect's first album came out at the end of this summer rather discreetly. Produced by the Austrian label DHF Records and distributed in our parts by Nocturne, this first opus nevertheless deserved a closer look, Perfect having proved in recent years that, like Fantan Mojah, he had become one of the unmissable figures of the current reggae scene.
Made up of 17 tracks, this record takes in most of the singles that made the young singjay's name: Hand cart bwoy of course, but also the excellent Amerimaka, Black Marcus on the Maroon riddim or All I've got on the Real life. There are also other, slightly lesser-known singles, all of quality, such as the calm and meditative Tyme on the Brighter riddim and The little old lady on The trod, or, in the purest reggae tradition, For sure on the Dutty rub, a modern version of the Mad mad, Nuh badda mi on the Sick and For ma family on the Hard drugs, as well as the excellent anti-G8 diatribe 8 gangsters on the Solid ground or the very hip hop Hit dem on Tiger Records' Rasta bounce.
Even if one may regret not finding certain songs such as Johnny on the Chapter a day or Giddimani questions on the Giddimani, which is nevertheless the title of the album, we will all the same appreciate having a few new tracks to sink our teeth into. Six in number, among these unreleased tracks one finds only very good reggae tunes, such as Market place, Wingless earth angel, Cry me a river, Rasta rebel and Sersi-T. The only small cloud over the picture is the cover of Dennis Brown's superb Love has found its way, whose original reggae rhythm has been sanitised to the extreme, giving a soul-soup result that is barely listenable.
To finish, we will say that, without being able to claim the status of album of the year, this first effort from Perfect nonetheless fulfils its mission with brio, constituting a good summary of the early part of the meteoric career of the bobo and a very good introduction to his talent and his potential for any neophyte fan of the new roots trend. Moreover, combined with his stage performance this summer closing the Ja'Sound, this album definitively proves that Perfect now has a good length's lead over his sidekick Fantan Mojah, whose album had left only a very mixed impression. To be bought without hesitation, then. |
