"Panic In Babylon" might be Lee Perry's latest album, but not quite. To credit the Jamaican producer alone with its authorship would be unfair and dishonest. No production, let alone mixing: the Upsetter merely sings his lyrics over tracks produced by DJ Star Trek, digital guru of the White Belly Rats, a Swiss electro-dub quartet. It has been a long time since "the Pest" was heard singing over such... conventional tracks. The sound is electronic, but the compositions are rather tame, far from Perry's earlier experiments that took him off the beaten and audible track.
The White Belly Rats, neighbours and fans of the producer, who is based in Switzerland, are only four: a drummer, a bassist, a guitarist, and DJ Star Trek at the desk to coordinate everything and plug the gaps. Hence the use of long loops that reinforce a mechanical feel .
Striking on stage, this impression is less pronounced on the album, thanks to numerous guests (including Rico Rodriguez on trombone on Panic In Babylon) who add colour to the whole. Inspector Gadget, with its car and telephone sound effects, illustrates this tendency without ever recapturing the producer's gentle madness. Likewise the use of a vocoder on Scratch's voice on Fight To the Finish. The skank of Are you coming home ? brings back more acoustic sounds, but the track then strays into samples of telephone conversations. Still, we hold on to the fine breathing space of Purity Rock, the languorous Perry's Ballad and the ironic I'm a Psychiatrist. Chilled by industrial riddims, the whole thing works without being essential. Until the Upsetter's next whim, the White Belly Rats and "Panic Ina Babylon" will at least have put Lee Scratch Perry back on the rails of the audible. |
