Junior Cony comes from the Parisian alternative scene of the 80s and more precisely from a group that counted many schoolboy fans short of rebellion, Ludwig Von 88. In early 2003, a year when the French dub scene was showing its vitality, Crash Disques released Cony's first solo album, the solid "Inna Roots Tradition", followed the same year by the acclaimed "At The Government Top", which gathered the vocal versions of the first. "Peace Monger", Junior Cony's new album (released on the label of the Berruriers Noirs: Folklore de la Zone Mondiale) is in keeping with this approach and it is a safe bet that a second opus with sung versions will appear in the coming months.

Junior Cony's style is a skilful blend of roots dub and electro. The guitar samples, the sound of the rhythms and the basslines all work to maintain the caressing warmth of old-school dub. But the rhythms most often resemble downtempo breakbeats (which glance gently towards Thievery Corporation) or electro dubs inspired by the English school started by Mad Professor. It is therefore at once resolutely roots and radically electro. Cony has found his recipe. You can hear it on the brilliant Namibia with its sustained tempo, and its heavy, regal bass lurking beneath an acid and compelling skank.

The progression, however, unfolds in sequences, in the great tradition of electronic music, which bets on hypnosis and effectiveness to make up for the absence of musicians' playing. Electronic melodies and keyboard pads punctuate the march of the track, from which a magical nonchalance emerges. The whole glides slowly and holds the attention more and more. Junior Cony writes simple, floating melodies. He knows that in dub, one has to take the time to set the mood. In the same vein, Family Affair, one of the best tracks on the opus, opens gently on an electro refrain before giving way to a frontal bass / drums supported by numerous percussion loops and a devastating guitar chop. A total success.

Unfortunately the album lacks balance. Was it necessary to open the tracklisting with an unconvincing "ambient" track? The same remark applies to the tedious To Late Dub, which fails to refresh us at the halfway point. One can therefore deplore a few longueurs. Junior Cony has a convincing and accomplished dub universe but fails to create surprise and to thrill us completely. A single that stands out, or even an unexpected featuring, is sorely missing. "Inna Roots Tradition" already left that feeling. Will the vocal versions to come help us revise our judgement? The door remains open until the artist's next delivery.
