REVIEW
Review written by François-Xavier Rougeot on Tuesday, March 13th 2007 - 27 733 views
There is no stopping Jah Mason. Just as he has finished a scorching tour of France, the Bobo singjay makes his return to the racks with "Life is just a Journey", a 14-track, roots-leaning album produced by Frenchie (Maximum Sound). That is his third album in ten months! If there was a time when the proliferation of Jah Mason albums was worrying, one can only be glad to see him bounce back so quickly after "My Princess Gone/The Saga Bed" (May 2006, on VP records) and "Wheat and Tears" (September 2006, on Greensleeves), two albums that rank among the heavyweights of his very extensive discography.
The flesh of "Life is just a Journey" is well served by the Firehouse Crew, Sly & Robbie, Mafia & Fluxy and Dalton Brownie. Mason, for his part, remains Mason: denunciation of Babylon's failings (Look who's crying, Blame the system), apology for marijuana (the solid Ganja for life) and religious faith (Give Jah some time). If the themes do not vary, the alternation between the rasping toast of his early days and his seductive laments (which he still masters better) always has its effect. Jah Mason lets loose a bit of fast flow on Can't stop me, an outro whose rhythm recalls a Military riddim in a hip hop sauce, as well as on the title track Life is just a Journey. But it is his roots tracks that leave the deepest mark, like the superb Don't Sell your Soul, on a replayed I Swear Riddim: "Don't sell your soul for material things", warns the former pupil of Capleton's David House.
We naturally find three singles released last year on Maximum Sound: the pleasant Things will be better (Jah Powers riddim), Feel my pain (Good Over Evil riddim) and above all the terrific Mama Earth, on an Intercom reloaded riddim that suits Jah Mason's style perfectly. If there was to be any worry on the announcement of the release of "Life is just a Journey", it lay rather there, in its ability to remain as homogeneous as those two eminent (and close) predecessors. Apart from one slight false note (So Long Down There), we are not disappointed. And if, as he claims here, life is but a journey, then for Jah Mason it is a journey under the sun, with an azure-blue horizon. |
Big Up
Le "So long down there" il claque bien!!
Donc big up Jah Mason! Et big up à toi aussi Jah Warrior!!!
MDR Big Up qd meme
