REVIEW

10 years already! It is 10 years since Buju Banton released his masterpiece "Inna Heights", successor to the excellent 'Til Shiloh'. To celebrate, VP is reissuing this oh-so-essential album, enriched with a few well-chosen bonuses. Produced almost entirely by Donovan Germain of the Penthouse label, this dense, homogeneous opus stands as a true forerunner of new roots, the real thing. It also marks the deejay's passage to an age of artistic maturity; here often more singer than deejay, Buju clearly asserts his reggae and conscious side. The album is interspersed with several spoken interventions by the singer, who explains in turn his philosophy, his story and his goals as an artist, which gives the album undeniable coherence.
There are a multitude of very beautiful reggae songs, cultural or romantic, including the huge hits Hills and valleys, Destiny and Love sponge, but also Close one yesterday, Cry no more, Single parent and African pride, not to mention the sublime a cappella intro. There is only one dancehall track, hardcore but effective: Love dem bad with Red Rat. In this roots setting, the guests do not jar: veterans (Toots Hibbert, King Stitch, Beres Hammond) or young revelations (Ras Shiloh and Jah Mali), they come to lend Buju a hand for a result that is always very pleasing (special mention to the very ska Small axe, as well as the sublime Give I strength).
The reissue adds three tracks to the tracklist; the very good and committed Politics time again on Bob Marley's Heathen riddim, the powerful (if slightly dated) Bad boy, and above all the huge unreleased duet with Morgan Heritage, Situation. The accompanying DVD bears witness to the early days of Buju Banton's success: 40 minutes of live recording at Sumfest 1996 in the company of Wayne Wonder, his great lifelong accomplice, as well as the video for Destiny (viewable here). As you will have gathered, this reissue does justice to the immense talent of one of the major artists of the reggae scene even today. Above all, it will allow new generations, who may have discovered Buju Banton late in the day, with tracks such as the recent Driver, to learn that this immense singer was not born yesterday, and already has more than one devastating hit to his name. A truly great album of a kind that is made only too rarely nowadays. Absolutely essential. |
