The Swiss band's second album, recorded in 2006, "What If" wins you over from the first listen. Far from imitating their distant Jamaican relatives, the band happily embraces a different way of making reggae, thanks in particular to African influences and subtle, intoxicating pop melodies. You are lulled from the very first notes by the smooth voice of Mark Kelly. This English-born singer-guitarist has a lovely timbre that recalls Keziah Jones, Finley Quaye or Patrice. The title track What If, with its Afro-jazz colours, opens the record delightfully, its heady "let it in let it in" chorus washing over you like a caressing wave. What follows is more reggae, but keeps an original colour. There is freedom and pleasure on Decide, which features tempo changes edging towards rock. This is obvious on System and Robin Bank, which could almost make you think of Radiohead in dub; the same cycles recur, with restful verses alternating with devastating, powerful choruses.

Rich and layered, the recordings reveal real artistic direction. Guitar chops and keyboard bubbles animate the mix from deep within, and the quality of the arrangements holds our attention just as much. The horn riffs are truly powerful, notably on the excellent Decide and Sweet Remedy, where the influence of Groundation, with whom they toured extensively, shines through. Inna Crisis uses reggae to create an original music, both roots and modern, authentic, without giving in to the genre's easy options. With their groove firmly in hand, the band does not hesitate to cover Ain't No Sunshine, a well-known Bill Withers standard, and does so successfully. Further proof, if any were needed, of this band's enormous potential.
