REVIEW
Review written by Sébastien Jobart on Monday, October 13th 2008 - 31 270 views
Rather than listening to Tiken Jah Fakoly, you may as well go and see him on stage. The famous griot hardly conceives of a concert without blowing up his audience along with his songs. The proof is this exemplary DVD devoted to the Ivorian singer, which at last shows the full measure of the artist. In Paris as elsewhere, Tiken Jah Fakoly sticks to his rule and does not depart from his now familiar stage recipe: energetic activism, contemplative denunciation and political interludes. A Tiken Jah Fakoly concert is like a two-hour demonstration, with rallying themes and ad hoc slogans, denouncing with fervour, sharing with passion.
But the essence of this double DVD is not in his stage performance at the Zénith de Paris (also available as a single audio CD): it lies in the three documentary films of nearly an hour each that complete it, and which shed light on the popular and political side of the spokesman for the voiceless by following him in his own country, with interviews and concert excerpts. Without false modesty, without waffle, Tiken Jah Fakoly opens up and reveals himself, through superb images and fascinating exchanges. Music, politics, Africa, Ivory Coast, exile... everything is covered, as in "Ma Côte d'Ivoire", directed by Sylvain Taillet and Eric Mulet, which looks at length at the Ivorian political, economic and social context. With the films by Jessy Notola as well ("Viens voir" and "Ma Côte d'Ivoire", which recounts Tiken's return home in December 2007), "D'Abidjan à Paris" offers a veritable documentary compendium on Tiken Jah Fakoly, going so far as to include some ten videos, rounding out a double DVD packed to the brim (nearly 5 hours of footage, no less). A reference, obviously indispensable. |
