Every reggae fan has surely glimpsed the sleeve of the album "The Seven Voyages Of Captain Sinbad", recorded at Channel One for Junjo Lawes in 1982. While the singular sleeve is regularly ranked among the finest of the genre, Captain Sinbad has not quite enjoyed the same fate. It took more than two decades to find him again. Discovered (and christened) by Sugar Minott at the dawn of the 80s, Captain Sinbad had great success with that famous album. His labels, Youth In Progress and Explosion, allowed him to reinvent himself when he dropped the mic (he would notably produce John McLean's If I Give My Heart To You).
The artist with a name drawn from the Thousand and One Nights is thus back with "Reggae Music Will Mad Unu !", a delicious comeback orchestrated by Frenchie (Maximum Sound). Friends of twenty years, the two men had co-produced the album "Jam World" at Greensleeves in 2005. And Frenchie had relaunched Captain Sinbad's singing career by calling him in on the Skateland Killer riddim series in 2011 (World Wide Rebellion), then with the singles Capital Offence and Jamaica 50 last year. Three effective, well-received tracks that paved the way for this new album, just as successful.
Recorded at Sonic Sounds in Kingston, "Reggae Music Will Mad Unu !" plunges us back into the early dancehall atmosphere of the early 80s. Frenchie does a splendid production job and manages to keep the rub a dub spirit intact. He gives Captain Sinbad the dream rhythms for his return, at once dense and stripped-back, modern and vintage, blending reggae, dancehall and hip hop. Even the sleeve plays the time machine card. All in all, a perfect sequel to "The Seven Voyages...".
