Augustus "Gussie" Clarke is not the most high-profile of producers, yet his work has been essential to Jamaica's musical landscape since the 1970s. The proof is this double CD released on VP Records (the 17 North Parade collection). "Gussie Presenting The Right Tracks" is in fact a reissue of the album originally released in 1976, which had only 11 tracks. By then, Gussie had already earned his stripes with Big Youth's fabulous album "Screaming Target", recorded, mixed and mastered in a single night in 1972, then pressed the next morning. Gussie was barely 18, having started his career while still at Kingston College, but he had just written a new chapter in Jamaican history by opening the door for the deejays and widening it the following year with "Gussie Presenting I Roy".

"Gussie Presenting The Right Tracks" captures the moment before international recognition, with Shabba Ranks, The Mighty Diamonds (Pass The Kouchie, that's him), Dennis Brown or Gregory Isaacs (Rumours). The sleeve shows him in his tiny studio on Church Street, before he founded the famous Music Works studio in 1988. It is the second half of the 1970s that is the subject of the collection here, with its emblematic riddims (Skylarking, Guiding Star, No, No, No…) and its cohorts of legends: Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo, Horace Andy, The Mighty Diamonds, I Roy, Leroy Smart, Jacob Miller, Delroy Wilson, Mikey Dread… "There was no logic in it at all!, Gussie Clarke explains in the booklet. It was just the love of difference and singularity. Everybody had a sound and a style and I would change the musicians to get a different atmosphere and a different feel."

In all, no fewer than 40 tracks shed light on Gussie Clarke's work, with 29 extra tracks drawn from the many versions by his groups Simplicity People or The Society Squad, not to mention superb versions by Augustus Pablo or Tommy McCook. Between supernatural classics and unreleased tracks, the selection will satisfy the most demanding enthusiast, all the more so as the reissue work is simply remarkable. The remastering does justice to the work of the producer, who was initiated into the science of the mix by King Tubby (at the same time as Philip Smart). The same concern for quality goes into the very detailed booklet, which is packed with information and anecdotes - we learn, for instance, that his Puppy label was handed over to him by the producer Leonard Santic Chin. For collectors, VP even pushes the boat out with a 7" box set, "Gussie Presenting The Right Sevens" with Leroy Smart. The tribute to Gussie Clarke's work continues with an album of his productions for Augustus Pablo, "Born To Dub You", and a 3 CD compilation ("Reggae Anthology"), due at the end of the year, which will retrace the rich history of his label (and studio) Music Works.
