REVIEW

Watch out, a UFO! Makasound has unearthed yet another gem from an old drawer. Carl Harvey, a supercharged guitarist, plays with Bunny Lee's riddims. All mixed by Prince Jammy.
Invited by his friend Jackie Mittoo to lay down a few notes on Willi Williams's album, Carl Harvey did not leave Bunny Lee indifferent. The producer offered him the chance to play on a few of his riddims. Among them are Queen Majesty by The Uniques, Rainy Night in Georgia by John Holt, The Sniper by Jackie Mittoo and Moving Away by Ken Boothe. Around Carl Harvey are Jackie Mittoo, Sly & Robbie, Earl Chinna Smith and Lloyd Parks. In one night, the album was done.
In the very interesting booklet, which includes an interview with the guitarist, Carl Harvey admits that he sometimes regrets these one-take recordings and not having been able to develop certain ideas. Yet it is precisely this spontaneity, this raw breath straight out of rock, that gives strength and appeal to this album, secretly released by Bunny Lee in 1979, then bootlegged by the Rhino label in 1994 (under the title "Guitar Boogie Dub", credited to Lee Perry).
There is urgency in Carl Harvey's touch on the guitar, a little Santana. He also knows how to handle nuance as the musical landscapes shift. Melodies follow fierce, wildly rock surges, as on Misty Night, a cover of the John Holt hit, where Carl Harvey leans to good effect on the bass line. He takes pains to blow the reggae rhythm apart with rock flights on World of Confusion and its sharp skank, or on the aptly named Guitar Inferno.
"Ecstasy of Mankind" can be listened to in one go, like an open book. Aimed as much at guitar lovers as at reggae fans, this finally rehabilitated album will above all win over collectors of atypical and precious objects. |
