Far, very far from the reissues of "What A Man Deal With" or "Diary Of The Silent Years", the reunion of the Makasound / Winston McAnuff pairing takes place here under the auspices of their new label, Black Eye, which has already hosted Steve Newland's formidable EP. This is no coincidence. For although the man nicknamed Electric Dread appears with his locks fully out on the very beautiful sleeve, "A Drop" can hardly lay claim to a reggae lineage. And this despite the presence of Earl Chinna Smith, Horsemouth Wallace, and Earl Bagga Walker, the bassist brought into the Gladiators after Clinton Fearon's departure.

Blues, soul-funk, dub, rock tinged with electro: Winston McAnuff rubs shoulders here with a joyous jumble of sounds concocted by Camille Bazbaz, a French organist used to musical patchworks. The man is eclectic, and so is his music. All the more so as he is accompanied by Yarol Poupaud, guitarist of the band FFF and co-producer of the album. One raises eyebrows, then ears, on hearing the very pop-rock Devil May Roar, the effective Sentenced, a perfect single with bluesy accents and a catchy melody, the moving and superb acoustic folk of Way Back Home, You Will Make It in the great 70s soul tradition, and finally Common Sense, the most reggae of them all. After years of struggle to receive what was owed to him (see interview), Winston McAnuff shows that his creative appetite is still intact, if not increased tenfold. The result of an unprecedented and audacious Franco-Jamaican collaboration, "A Drop" is an astonishing object, as original as it is disconcerting.
