The construction of Jamaican identity
on Monday, October 19th 2009 - 5 852 views
Antony Ceyrat, a graduate of Sciences-Po Strasbourg with a Master 2 in History from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris), is the author of "JAMAÏQUE : La construction de l'identité noire depuis l'indépendance", published by L'Harmattan (Paris).
While we wait to write a review of our own, here is the publisher's description:
"A British colony since 1655, Jamaica gained its independence in 1962. The destination of a one-way journey for nearly a million deported Africans, the island is eaten away by the scars of the memory of slavery. This book highlights the importance of history and of the issues of memory in the process of building social identities, and underlines the central role of culture in power struggles."
