''Dj's & Toasters Jamaïcains'', by Eric Doumerc and Jérémie Kroubo Dagnini
on Thursday, April 02nd 2015 - 15 101 views
More than a mere branch of the reggae tree, the emergence of the deejay style in Jamaica in the 70s opened up new musical frontiers, paving the way for American hip hop. Eric Doumerc and Jérémie Kroubo Dagnini have studied this genre in its own right to write, together, ''Dj's & Toasters Jamaïcains : 1970-1979'', published by Camion Blanc.
Linking deejays to African griots (like them, they are the chroniclers of society), the two authors trace the Jamaican oral tradition by drawing on its greatest figures (U-Roy, Big Youth, Prince Jazzbo...) and on analysis of their lyrics.
Jérémie Kroubo Dagnini is the author of several books on reggae and Jamaica, including "Vibrations jamaïcaines" in 2011; Eric Doumerc teaches English at the University of Toulouse and recently published "Le reggae dans le texte" with the same publisher.
