Irie FM toughens its broadcasting policy

At a time when Jamaican music, dancehall first and foremost, is drawing the wrath of leaders and censors all over the world, the island's number 1 radio station, Irie FM, has decided to follow the lead of the international authorities and make its local artists aware of the content of their lyrics.

Irie FM toughens its broadcasting policy

It has thus just announced, in a statement taking immediate effect, that artists who include explicit and indecent lyrics in some of their songs will be systematically and permanently banned from the station's playlists.

The statement follows an incident that occurred recently, involving one of Irie FM's presenters, who is said to have played for nearly two months a song in its "clean" single version, whereas the same track in its album version contained lyrics running against the Children's Programming Code and the 1996 Television and Radio Music Broadcasting Law.
