A dramatic episode of domestic violence lies behind the suicide, on Friday 18 July, of the Jamaican singer Eloquent, aged 27. An argument between the artist and his girlfriend, the mother of his three-year-old son, ended in tragedy when the singer fatally wounded his partner in the throat. Believing he had killed her, Eloquent then hanged himself from a tree near his home in St Ann. The young woman was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

The tragedy was relayed live on Irie FM radio, given that Dj Sunshine, a presenter at the station and a producer for the Yellow Moon label, had helped make Eloquent's talent known through tracks such as Grandma cry and Did you pray. The singer had also made a name for himself with the single Gun alone dem glorify on Christopher Birch's Dreams riddim.
