We now know what happened on the evening of Thursday 18 October 2007, when Lucky Dube met his death in South Africa. At the time, Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht, a police spokeswoman, had declared that the police would "turn over every stone" to find the culprits. It took a year and a half of investigation and proceedings to see them behind bars: their trial ended on Tuesday 31 March 2009.

As we reported at the time (news of 22/10/2007), Lucky Dube was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was dropping his two children at his brother's house in Rosettenville, in the suburbs of Johannesburg, when three men tried to steal his vehicle. They ordered him out of his car but Lucky Dube tried to flee. That is when the men opened fire.
Two of the murderers tried to escape while being taken to court to hear the verdict: all three men were sentenced to life imprisonment. A fourth, also involved, was granted immunity in exchange for testifying against his accomplices.
