Lee Perry back on the controls
on Tuesday, November 26th 2013 - 8 498 views
The Jamaican producer Lee Perry is back on the controls for a new album, "Back On The Controls", produced with his London counterpart Daniel Boyle.
Daniel Boyle and Lee Perry met in 2011 at Rolling Lion Studio in London. A fan of the sound the Upsetter created in his Black Ark studio, Daniel quickly accepted when Scratch offered to produce his new album.
To recapture that "phenomenal sound", Daniel gathered vintage equipment. "We recreated the Black Ark studio in my studio!" he explains. Under Scratch's direction, he patiently assembled the gear the Upsetter had at his disposal in the 70s. "Scratch got interesting effects out of the Mutron Bi-Phase, for example. He used it in a certain order and that's what we do for our mixes." For Lee Perry does not simply "voice" the riddims: he also sat behind the console, adding his effects, just like in the good old days.
Daniel Boyle brought together Dennis Bovell on bass, Hughie Izachaar on guitar, Christine Miller on backing vocals and Hornsman Coyote on trombone, among others. As in the past, "Back On The Controls" is also due out on the Upsetter label, which Lee Perry intends to bring back from the ashes for the occasion.
With the 15 tracks ready and mixed, one last obstacle remains: pressing the vinyl and starting CD manufacture. To do so, Daniel Boyle and Lee Perry have turned to the Kickstarter funding platform, following the crowdfunding model that has proved its worth.
There is time until 21 January to back the project and reach the target of 6,000 pounds (around 7,161 euros): http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1727921956/the-new-lee-scratch-perry-album-back-on-the-contro
