The French label Heartical dives back into classic Jamaican reggae riddims. Its new series revisits the Know Myself riddim, an instrumental recorded in 1974 by BB Seaton's Conscious Minds as Someting New, and popularised a few years later by Ernest Wilson's killer tune I Know Myself at Channel One.

It is the Basque Dub Foundation who replay this famous rhythm with a special guest: Sly Dunbar, who played drums on the original riddim, is also at the helm of this new version, coming full circle nearly forty years on. Some of the tracks from this series could already be heard on the compilation "Heartical Story", released in June.

Such as Ernest Wilson's track himself in a duet with deejay Papa Kojak, or Joseph Cotton's Gone Clear. The riddim thus gives pride of place to the veterans: besides Ernest Wilson, who revisits his hit solo, there are also Michael Rose and Dawn Penn, who clashes her own classic No No No with this Yes Yes Yes.

Also on the tracklist are Zareb (formerly Mr Flash), the Spanish duo Rootsamala, General Levy, Tiwony, Uman and finally a melodica version and, naturally, a BDF-signed dub.

Already available as a 13-track digital release and on 7" from 30 October 2011:
HS056 - MYKAL ROZE "Universal Struggle" / ROOTSAMALA "Decisions" (2011)
HS057 - GENERAL LEVY "Chant" / BDF "Melodica Knowledge" (2011)
HS058 - JOSEPH COTTON "Gone Clear" / ZAREB "Rise again" (2011)
HS059 - DAWN PENN "Yes, Yes, Yes (Jah Loves me) / TIWONY "Justice" (2011)
HS060 - ERNEST WILSON "Know Myself" / ERNEST WILSON & KOJAK "True Love" (2011)

In Jamaica, the lifeblood of the record industry is the riddim (from "rhythm"), an instrumental produced by a label. A label that does not settle for recording a single artist on that riddim, but as many as it can: this is what is called a "series". To make a name for itself, a label will try to get big names on its riddim. Amid the endless flow of releases, artists have every interest in voicing the most popular riddim of the moment. Every week in Jamaica, more than a hundred 7" singles are produced this way. Only later, if an artist manages to find a distributor and a record company, can they make an album, which usually gathers some of those singles.
