News from the other side of the Channel: the latest release from the English label Foundation Sound, the Hard Drop Riddim, has been available since the start of the month on 10-inch vinyl (3 tracks plus the version). This one drop riddim, with its powerful bassline, is produced by King Sammy (Spectacular Productions) and mixed by English dubmaster Nick Manasseh.

"In the ghetto, all the youths bear scars": on Robberman, English scene veteran Mickey Murka denounces the badman mentality affecting our societies, urging young people not to take the wrong path. After his recent single on the Roots Garden Records label, Ras Zacharri returns for a duet with Jah Rueben Mystic on the conscious Lion Inna Jungle. We finish, once again, with a classic theme: Medication, a ganja tune delivered by rising English star Dark Angel.

Tracklist :
1. Anthony B - Dirty heart dem a carry
2. Beenie Man - Just your time
3. Luciano - Bad boy put it down
4. Fantan Mojah
5. Sugar Roy & Conrad Crystal - Make it one day
6. Natural Black - Make good use of your time
7. Turbulence - Full me up head a think
8. Warrior King - On my knees I pray

In Jamaica, the lifeblood of the record industry is the riddim (from "rhythm"), an instrumental produced by a label. A label that does not settle for recording a single artist on that riddim, but as many as it can: this is what is called a "series". To make a name for itself, a label will try to get big names on its riddim. Amid the endless flow of releases, artists have every interest in voicing the most popular riddim of the moment. Every week in Jamaica, more than a hundred 7" singles are produced this way. Only later, if an artist manages to find a distributor and a record company, can they make an album, which usually gathers some of those singles.
