At a time when Jamaica has succumbed to dancehall and reggae is growing ever more discreet on the island, Don Corleon almost cuts a figure of resistance, still producing new-roots riddims.
His latest, the Message Riddim, welcomes a variety of singers, from established artists to up-and-comers (Da Professor, Ikaya, Protoje, Million Stylez...)

A fairly classic riddim overall, but carried by very good tracks from Kymani Marley and Pressure. Even Vybz Kartel, who sounds a little out of place on the tracklist, delivers a conscious lyric, Poor people land.

Tracklist:
01. Da Professor - Words
02. Vital - Don't say no
03. Jah Vinci - Wicked hearts
04. Richie Spice - Got to make it
05. Ikaya - Fly away
06. Kymani Marley - Brave ones
07. Pressure - Jah love
08. Protoje - The message
09. Million Stylez - Brighter days
10. Sophia Squire - Love
11. Cecile - Rise up
12. Vybz Kartel - Poor people land

In Jamaica, the lifeblood of the record industry is the riddim (from "rhythm"), an instrumental produced by a label. A label that does not settle for recording a single artist on that riddim, but as many as it can: this is what is called a "series". To make a name for itself, a label will try to get big names on its riddim. Amid the endless flow of releases, artists have every interest in voicing the most popular riddim of the moment. Every week in Jamaica, more than a hundred 7" singles are produced this way. Only later, if an artist manages to find a distributor and a record company, can they make an album, which usually gathers some of those singles.
