House of the Rising Sun riddim – Dub Squad

After a first single with Marina P, covering the classic of classics, Summertime, Dub Squad has taken on another monument of American popular music for its first series: The House of the Rising Sun.

The reggae adaptation of this traditional folk song (whose best-known commercial version is probably the Animals' in 1964, not forgetting the French version by our national Johnny the same year) features a wide variety of artists: the Jamaican veterans Rod Taylor and Earl Zero, but also Solo Banton and Omar Perry, and the Frenchies Pierpoljak, Brahim and Tiwony, who contributes lyrics in English.

Tracklist:
01. Rod Taylor - House Of The Rising Sun
02. Omar Perry – Find A Better Way
03. Pierpoljak - Leave Out Folley
04. Wild Life - Kuul Ruler
05. Earl Zero – One for Jah
06. Solo Banton – Rising Sun
07. Inyaki - Rising Sun (Melodica Version)
08. Mark Wonder - Born To Be King
09. Brahim – Trop chère
10. Zareb - Give Us Solution
11. Eric Dee's Horns Section – The House of the rising horns
12. Ras Matthew : King Of Kings
13. Little Dany – Quand ça fait mal
14. Faianatur - Righteous Gates
15. King Tidal - Deeper
16. Tiwony : Moon Light

In Jamaica, the lifeblood of the record industry is the riddim (from "rhythm"), an instrumental produced by a label. A label that does not settle for recording a single artist on that riddim, but as many as it can: this is what is called a "series". To make a name for itself, a label will try to get big names on its riddim. Amid the endless flow of releases, artists have every interest in voicing the most popular riddim of the moment. Every week in Jamaica, more than a hundred 7" singles are produced this way. Only later, if an artist manages to find a distributor and a record company, can they make an album, which usually gathers some of those singles.
