BIO
If the album "Love So Nice" established him on the new roots scene in 2001, building a career in music was not Junior Kelly's first goal. Born Keith Morgan on 23 September 1969 on Waltham Park Road in Kingston, JA, he moved with his family to Spanish Town at the age of nine. He studied at St Catherine High School and was steeped in music from childhood. His father and grandfather played the banjo, his mother sang in the church choir and his eldest brother, Jim Kelly, was a DJ for the Killimanjaro sound system. In 1982, Jim was murdered in Spanish Town while trying to settle a dispute between Derrick (another Kelly brother) and local rudies. Jim was a role model for young Keith, then 13, and had provided for most of the family's needs. Keith, the youngest, until then overprotected by his family, was deeply marked by the event. Time passed and around 1986 he decided to go into music and follow in his brother's footsteps. He took the name Junior Kelly as a tribute to him.
"My first professional recording was Hungry Days," Junior Kelly told us in interview. "People don't know it, but I made that song a long time ago, well before Love so nice. Hungry days is my personal experience, one that everybody can relate to, because the vast majority of the planet knows what hunger is."
He spent time in sound systems and tried to get noticed on the island with a nu-roots sound that gave Rastafari back its place in modern Jamaican music. He recorded his second tune in 1993: Give Them A Bly. Through the 90s he gradually made his mark with quality singles such as Black woman, Go to hell and Hungry Days. But recognition came in 1999 with his international hit Love so nice on the Stir it up riddim. It stayed in the Jamaican charts for thirteen consecutive weeks and (slowly but surely) travelled around the world. The success of that single led Junior Kelly to sign with Jetstar in 2000. Jetstar then produced his first album, "Rise", made by Mafia & Fluxy. The album was a success and made a very good impression in England. It was followed closely by the second opus, "Juvenile".
In 2001, VP Records produced the excellent album "Love so nice", which truly established him as a new reference in new roots. A string of hits followed, such as "Can't get away", "Clean Heart", "One Love" and "Jah Jah Live on". Junior Kelly hit very hard with "Love so nice" and was awarded by the media the title of roots ambassador of the millennium. A prolific artist, he has released an average of two albums a year since 2000, not counting compilations alongside big names of dancehall such as Capleton, Sizzla, Anthony B, Luciano and others. Although he appreciates some artists of the new generation, it is from the rootsmen that Junior Kelly draws his inspiration. He readily cites Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Israel Vibration and Burning Spear. In 2002, he set off on a vast international tour. A turbaned and deeply spiritual singer, he likes France, like many others, and took part in the 2003 edition of Jamaican Sunrise with a memorable performance. He also made a big impression at the Zénith in Paris in April 2004, sharing the bill with Turbulence and Jah Mason. He tours the whole world but is rather little in demand in Jamaica. In 2004 came the album "Creation" on the Penitentiary label and, above all, "Tough Life" on VP Records, which compiles all his hits of the moment (Rasta should be deeper, Receive, Blaze, Tough life...). It would be five years before Junior Kelly returned to the studio, with the album "Red Pond" in 2010.
