It is well known that there is nothing better than a good old classic. After three quality compilations, the producers at Nova Records have not departed from the rule with the release, a little while ago, of "Rare Grooves Reggae vol. 4". This roots compilation gathers fifteen hits from the 1970s-80s, if we except Warning Sign by the Born Jamericans, which gives the album a more modern touch, with its 90s hip-hop / dancehall style. "Rare Grooves Reggae 04" subtly runs through the roots genre. It features worldwide hits: Police in helicopter by John Holt (1982), Malcom X by Earl 16 (1982) or Cuss Cuss by Horace Andy, released in 1982 on the album "Dance Hall Style" (on Wackies), which gave wings to the mythical riddim of the same name. Rare Grooves serves up jewels while avoiding the pitfall of tracks worn out by too many compilation appearances: Jacob "Killer" Miller (I'm in love), the Heptones (Richard Khoury), Johnny Clarke (Every knee shall bow) or Sylford Walker (Give thanks and praises).

The influence of soul on reggae can be measured by listening to Love come tumbling down (Ken Boothe), Forgive them lord (B.B. Seaton) or Be thankful (Bunny Rugs). Not forgetting the mystical cover of Papa was a rolling stone by Tapper Zukie. Nova's perseverance deserves a salute: with licensing to deal with, the producers of "Rare Grooves Reggae 04" had a hard time stringing so many pearls on their roots necklace, even suffering a few refusals (Poison flour by Dr. Alimantado, for example). And one cannot remain unmoved by the CD's cardboard sleeve: the black and white photo of the two Jamaicans makes you want to look inside, where there is a mini-biography of each of the artists. Careful work that makes "Rare grooves reggae 04" a perfect addition to a record collection.
