Greensleeves had a sharp nose in signing Nasio Fontaine for the release of his fifth album, "Universal Cry". These twelve tracks could well become those of consecration for the English label's new protégé, discovered by the general public in 1994 with his first album, "Reggae Power". Twelve years have passed since, during which the Dominican has never stopped consolidating his universal aspirations.

Universal peace is the dominant message of Nasio Fontaine on Universal Cry. "When will these awful wars end / When can the children go out and play / I want to see / When all oppressions come to an end", he sings on the poignant anthem When. Universal peace was also the leitmotif of the best-known of Jamaicans, Bob Marley. The comparison between the two men does not stop there. Their voices, both husky and soft, are alike. The affiliation is striking on the excellent Prophet and on Behold, the album's last Nyabinghi track, which is reminiscent of Bob Marley's Rastaman Chant.

"Universal Cry" is a reflection of its creator, born to a Caribbean Indian mother and a father of African origin: mixed. While the common thread remains roots reggae, Nasio Fontaine also tries his hand at soul rock on the opening track She lost track. The harmonica intonations of Mark Feltham on Babylon, When, Crucial and Armed and dangerous and the breath of saxophonist Dave O'Higgins, prominent on Hyprocrites, bear witness to Nasio Fontaine's eclecticism and his soul inspirations. Nasio Fontaine's mystical and stripped-back style is pleasing; his music, elegant, flows by itself.
