Under pressure, Sizzla cancels his tour
on Thursday, May 29th 2008 - 20 464 views
Sizzla's French tour has ended up being cut short. Faced with the insistence of the LGBT associations, Sizzla has quite simply decided to cancel his European tour, including the dates in Montpellier and Ramonville. This is the outcome of intense negotiations held over several days between Eddie Brown, Sizzla's European agent, and David Auerbach Chiffrin, President of the association Tjenbé Red. The sticking point between the two parties: Sizzla had little taste for the proposal that he should fund the associations' activism in any way whatsoever.
Tjenbé Red had made several demands for Sizzla to be allowed on stage. Besides the express request that he respect the provisions set out in the Reggae Compassionate Act, Tchenbé Red wanted to be able to distribute information flyers on homophobia and HIV, as well as condoms, at the venues of Sizzla's concerts. This was in addition to a speech on stage by one of their representatives at the start of the concert.
So far, nothing very new, except that Tjenbé Red pushed it even further by asking Sizzla to pay the travel costs of its members, or by suggesting that he make a donation (a percentage of the takings from his French concerts) to show his support for the fight against homophobia.
It is Eddie Brown who relates that Sizzla swiftly decided to put an end to his European tour.
While acknowledging that he had made mistakes, Sizzla nonetheless considers that he had respected the principles of the RC Act as a whole. Unwilling to be "guillotined" and "crucified" on stage, and to pay on top of that for his detractors to attend, Sizzla thus closed the door on any negotiation and headed straight back to Jamaica.
