UB40: Maxi Priest replaces Ali Campbell

Like Genesis, members leave but the band stays. UB40’s career will not end with Ali Campbell’s. After the departure of its charismatic leader (news of 3101/2008) almost thirty years after the band’s birth, the English group will bounce back with a new singer well known to lovers rock fans, Maxi Priest. This is what the Birmingham Mail reveals in its edition of 14 March 2008. The reunion of UB40 and Maxi Priest, who had already joined them on tour, has already produced a recording, a cover of Bob Marley’s I Shot The Sheriff.

Meanwhile, Ali Campbell is rehearsing with a new line-up in order to play a showcase at London’s Royal Albert Hall, to mark his second solo album, with the very evocative title "Running Free". "It will be a historic night, he confided, Pato Banton will be there, Sly & Robbie are coming and the most exciting thing about it is that I’ll be sharing the stage with my hero of all time, Smokey Robinson (a figure of the Motown label and leader of the Miracles, ed.)."
