Eek A Mouse in hot water
on Friday, August 22nd 2008 - 11 231 views
Eek A Mouse is making more headlines in the crime pages than for his musical activities. After his racist remarks ahead of the Reggae Carifest Festival, from which he was eventually dropped (see news of 18/06/2008), it is a very sorry picture of Ripton Joseph Hylton that we saw this weekend, coming from the Dare County detention centre in North Carolina.
While performing on the evening of Saturday 16 August in the town of Kill Devil Hills, the veteran singer, aged 50, was arrested and jailed the next day on charges of kidnapping, rape and drug possession. A 23-year-old girl lodged a complaint against him, accusing him of holding her captive and abusing her in a motel in the town.
Eek A Mouse, who lives in Los Angeles, was released after posting bail of $52,000 but could still find himself behind bars for some time if the accusations are confirmed. North Carolina's legal arsenal is indeed very repressive (the state applies the death penalty) and provides for up to 40 years' imprisonment for the rape charge alone.
In brief...
