Willi Williams, at last a new album
on Monday, June 29th 2009 - 6 700 views
It has been 15 years since we had anything new to listen to: since 1994, Jamaican Willi Williams had remained hopelessly discreet. The author of the splendid album "Messenger Man", recorded in 1978, has found his way back to the studio from Toronto, where he lives.
"Di Real Rock" (a nod to the Studio One riddim that made his name) mixes modern and older productions, recorded with the Canadian backing band The Drum Street Crew, and notably Jamaican keyboardist Bobby Kalphat, a long-time sidekick.
What we have heard of this new opus stays in the straight line of his earlier albums: roots rhythms dominated by the bass and drums pairing, with his airy vocals floating above. Unfortunately, this new effort from the author of the hits Armagideon Time and Give Jah Praise is not yet distributed in France.
Meanwhile, Willi Williams was honoured for his whole career on 14 June at the third Reggae Music Achievement Awards in Canada.
