UB40 vs UB40
on Friday, January 24th 2014 - 8 282 views
Last week, the announcement of the reunion of the three former UB40 members, Ali Campbell, Astro (Terence Wilson) and Michael Virtue, who are getting together around a new album, did not fail to provoke a reaction from the other members of the band.
Published on the site http://www.ub40.org, which is not the band's official website (that being http://www.ub40.org), it angered the other members of the group, who still perform under the name UB40. They denounced this ambiguity (which misled us too) in a statement that we reproduce below.
"We are outraged by this latest desperate attempt by our former friends to hijack the brand name, the business and the legacy of UB40. Under that name, we have worked tirelessly for the last 35 years, on world tours and promoting our albums.
"As our fans know, Ali Campbell left UB40 six years ago citing problems with the band and has since pursued a solo career. Meanwhile, Ali has repeatedly tried to discredit his former companions, in the media and elsewhere.
"But this new attempt to sow confusion and manipulate UB40 fans is frankly pathetic. We are disappointed that he feels the need to behave this way and just as disappointed that Astro has joined him.
"Five other founding members of UB40: Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer and Norman Hassan will be touring in 2014, notably in the UK in March and April. UB40 is also pleased to announce that extra dates have been added, including a second night in Birmingham on 19 April: tickets go on sale from Monday 27 January. To find all the dates of the authentic UB40, head to our official website, Facebook and Twitter pages at www.UB40.co.uk, facebook.com/ub40official and @ UB40official.
"As for Ali, Mickey and Astro, the matter is now in the hands of our lawyers."
