REVIEW

The bard of Ivorian protest song has not deviated one iota from his line of conduct: denouncing, again and always, injustice and racism. With the track Trop de Bla bla, he shows that he has lost none of his verve. The Ivorian has gone back to Africa to record, on his label Fakoly Music, which he set up in the other land of the griots, Mali, Ivory Coast having become a little too dangerous for him. A return to the roots that allows Beta Simon to make the most of his media exposure: the Ivorian rasta, who sings in a language he invented, Baïssade, has become the label's first signing, and lays down his rhymes on the explicit Ma Côte d'Ivoire. Tiken Jah Fakoly even drags two unexpected guests in his wake: the Marseillais Soprano of Psy 4 de la Rime, on a track addressed directly to Brice Hortefeux, Ouvrez les frontières, and the polyglot of Senegalese origin Akon, who should add some nice value to the album on the US market, with the very good Soldier.
Fakoly's warm timbre still works wonders on his African-style reggae, exported by Alpha Blondy and giving pride of place to guitar and local instruments. Tiken Jah even attempts the perilous exercise of transposing Sting's hit Englishman in New York into French, with more or less success on Africain à Paris. He also takes the media to task, without mincing his words: "Come and see, you who talk without knowing". And even if, with this smoother mix, Tiken Jah Fakoly loses a little of the raw side of his reggae, it is to the advantage of his message, which is playing on every airwave.
