REVIEW

You hardly recognise the band from Angers on their new album, "Living in Monochrome". Well, a bit all the same. But the logic has been reversed: instead of making dub tinged with rock, they make rock tinged with dub. Which creates a hell of a sonic difference. A bit as if they had belched out all the rock tendencies that used to wander about as shadow puppets on the previous records. We do not know the details of the story, but the guitars have clearly seized power! Heady riffs, a wriggling bass, a drummer playing straight beats, back in time, yes, this is rock. But Zenzile's main quality is a refined mix, with that way of transcending the bass that made their name.
On that front, they have not changed.
The same care has been lavished on the guitar, obviously electric and distorted. The Angers collective even convinced the Wild Bunch sorcerer, Tricky, to come and lay down vocals on a very effective disco-rock, Reflection, before cornering the dub poetess Jamika on an 80s Manchester-style groove. Among the guests, all English speakers, there is also the Welshman David K. Alderman of the Warehouse 99 Project. Zenzile, now "old", turns up intermittently, as on Rising Fist with Sir Jean Gomis, leader of the Lyon band Mei-Tei-Sho, and on a dub with an evocative title, Offshore. Having taken a substantial lead over all its French dub rivals, Zenzile has probably just released the best French rock album of the year.

Mi seh Big Up Man, Irie Irie Roots Rock Babylon Killah !
A quand le hardrock pour High tone?
Plus sérieusement ça m'a fait un choc, on dirait des chansons rock commerciales passant sur Europe 2.
L'esprit electro-dub est tout de même un peu présent ...
