"Rockamovya" is a bit like the recipe for a sequel to a big Hollywood franchise: take well-known characters and drop them into a new setting. Here, the three leaders of Groundation (Marcus Urani on keyboards, Harrison Stafford the guitarist-singer, Ryan Newman the bassist) break away from the rest of the Californian band to join, for the length of a project, Leeroy "Horsemouth" Wallace (famous drummer of the Black Disciples) and Will Bernard, American jazz guitarist. His path has already crossed that of Charlie Hunter, another jazzman who invited Ernest Ranglin onto his albums, proof of a genuine jazz-reggae scene in the USA. The four protagonists met during Groundation's tour in tribute to Bob Marley in February 2006, while they were gathered on the West Coast of the USA for a series of concerts in tribute to Bob Marley.

Freed from the thematic density of Groundation, the music of "Rockamovya" becomes more diverse, within Jamaican popular music. Behind the roots, the fetish object of the Californian band, one discovers nyabinghi, rocksteady and ska sounds. While the overall structure remains Groundation's signature (ten long tracks make up the album), the arrangements become more melodic, as in the very airy The Bounty. Will Bernard's ethereal guitar breathes in an extra jazz soul, while Horsemouth, with his elastic drumming, stretches or tightens his rhythm with bewildering ease. Ideal for Ryan Newman, who follows him to the letter, while Marcus Urani has rarely been so free to let his inspiration speak. "Rockamovya" has the taste and smell of Groundation, but it is not quite Groundation. Just a new facet of the Californians' creativity.

Respect!
