BIO
Considered one of the most promising artists of the new generation, both for his flows and his lyrics, Busy Signal understood very early on, as a young artist, that he had to capture the public's attention. Developing his music around concepts since his first success, Born & grow, he won over an audience that was first local, then international. Busy Signal is now presented as one of the future stars of dancehall, and 2008 will undoubtedly be a landmark year for him with the release of a much-awaited second solo album, not to mention the collective opus of the Alliance, of which he is a member.
Born Reano Gordon in Tivoli Gardens, in the heart of west Kingston, Busy Signal grew up between the parish of St Ann and the communities of Papine, Standpipe and Tivoli. A classic start to his career: he first cut his teeth singing in church, encouraged by his mother. At school, he continued his apprenticeship by drumming his fists in rhythm on his desk, running through the Bounty Killer songs he knew by heart and honing his own style. The name Busy Signal (literally, the engaged tone), in reference to his temperament, was given to him by a friend. He launched himself on the dancehall scene in 2003 with his own perspective, determined to chart his own musical path. His first single Born and grow (Stainless records) caught the public's attention, because it depicts the everyday reality of Jamaicans without compromise. But it was with the track Step out (Gravi-T label, from selector Jazzy T of the Renaissance sound system) that he really got himself noticed. 2005 was a pivotal year: his track Step out was one of the most played on the island and he multiplied his stage performances. Whether at the Smirnoff Experience, at Sting or by opening the first show on the cable channel MTV Tempo, he left his audience with an explosive memory every time.
Rarely one to do so, Busy began to record on riddims with other artists: his combination Full clip on the Anger management riddim (Daseca productions) with Mavado, then an up-and-coming artist, made a lasting impression. He followed with a string of singles: Pharmacy (Sweat riddim) and So busy for Don Corleon, Too much guns (Man fi dead riddim) for the H2O label, his duet Because of you with the much sought-after Tami Chynn for the producers Leftside & Esco (Young legends label), My highness on the Inspector riddim from the Stainless label and the hit Not going down (Ice breaka riddim, again for Jazzy T but this time on the Renaissance label). All his singles built his reputation, but it was after his performance at Sumfest 2006, when he was invited by G-Unit, that things sped up... Busy went to play in England and Japan to win new audiences and, above all, he joined Bounty Killer's Alliance crew, a crowning moment for him as he had long admired the "Warlord". He released his first solo effort "Step out" (distributed by Greensleeves) in the wake of this. The album, produced largely through his own label, Network, met with far more than a critical success: he is now an essential artist who has to be reckoned with!
The first months of 2007 were mainly devoted to recording new tracks, whether on series of riddims (Rising on Don Corleon's Raging bull riddim, Tool on Black Chiney's Drumline), with new producers (Powercut on the riddim of the same name and Jah protect me on Stephen McGregor's Dark again riddim for the Big Ship label, Rescue me on John John's Shoot out) or with long-time partners, as with the Daseca label, for whom he cut one of the most played tracks of the year, These days. His track Jail for the Jam 2 label enjoyed the same success and enabled Busy Signal to reach number one in the charts for the second time that year, matching the scores of Beenie Man and Vybz Kartel.
2008 was the year of consecration for the deejay: spurred on by the producer, artist and beatmaker Demarco, he landed his first number one of the year with Pon di edge (Star Kutt productions). Now managed by Shane Brown, via his Juke Box label (for whom he recorded a host of new tracks such as Nicky titty on the Warning riddim, Unknown number and Run dem with Morgan Heritage), he released his second album, "Loaded".
Packed with hits (The days, Jail, People so evil...), this second album confirmed his status as a safe bet of Jamaican dancehall. In 2010, his third album, "D.O.B", marked a break. Far from the dark moods, the rhythms were formatted for clubs and radio. More sanitised and mainstream, Busy Signal left his fans baffled. Still on the edge of crossover, he promises a 100% reggae album for 2012, again produced by Shane Brown.
